The Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC), the central regulatory body of the Kahnawake online gambling business is unhappy after criticized heavily by the 60 Minutes story on cheating in online poker.
The story of cheating at UltimateBet.com and AbsolutePoker.com has widely reported on the Internet, but not in mainstream media until now. Cracked wide open by online poker players noticing a heavy deviation from the average in the play of some poker players, the story was wildly popular inside the online poker world.
60 Minutes labelled their report "The Cheaters" and notably took shots at the KGC and the ownership structure of both poker sites -- they are now owned by the same company. The KGC's $2M USD 'slap on the wrist' for the poker sites and their agreement to hide the identity of the masterminds behind the card-viewing scheme further makes the commission look bad on the 60 Minutes program.
The two poker sites have, indeed refunded millions of dollars to players affected by the cheating scandal and now claim to have powerful anti-cheating systems in place to avoid a repeat problem.
Meanwhile, the Kahnawake have been painted as a relatively illegitimate body by the TV show. With an online gambling industry based off-shore and in grey legal territory, the KGC needs to look and BE a legitimate face to online gambling for the companies that operate under its legal umbrella.
